Here at NEXMedium, we were thrilled to provide media liaison for the graduation ceremony of the latest Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) cohort in Kisumu on April 4th, 2024. This inspiring program empowers women entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive!

The ceremony celebrated the graduation of 27 amazing women who participated in the intensive 13-week AWE program. This program, funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), provides women entrepreneurs with training, coaching, and mentorship to help them develop their business skills and confidence.

AWE: Empowering Women Entrepreneurs Globally

Since its inception in Kenya in 2019, AWE has impacted the lives of over 450 women entrepreneurs. Globally, the program boasts a network of over 15,000 graduates who have grown their businesses and adapted to new economic challenges, including those brought on by COVID-19.

Investing in Women Strengthens Communities

Ella Wafula, the program’s Lead Implementer in Kenya, emphasizes the program’s far-reaching impact. “AWE has seen women entrepreneurs not only grow their businesses but also expand their networks and gain valuable confidence,” she says. This program directly supports the U.S. National Strategy on Gender Equity and Equality by fostering women’s economic participation.

A Flexible and Effective Learning Experience

The AWE program offers a dynamic learning experience that combines the online platform DreamBuilder with in-person mentorship and guidance. DreamBuilder, created by Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Management and the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation, equips participants with core business skills like strategic planning, marketing, and financial management. Local mentors then provide additional support and guidance through classroom activities and real-world application of these skills.

Measurable Results and Lasting Impact

The AWE program delivers tangible results. A 2021 evaluation revealed that 74% of graduates see increased revenue in their businesses, and 29% hire additional staff. More importantly, the program empowers women. Over 90% of graduates report feeling more confident after completing the program, citing increased skills in strategic planning and public speaking.
